September Back to School Challenge

You are cordially invited to play, get more involved with the team, get inspired, share your talent, take advantage of some free promotion... get ready for September's team creative challenge!

September's Challenge

Our theme is "backtoschool". September marks the first day of school in most places, so this is the perfect time to show off some great back to school items! This challenge is all about the things that remind you of school. You are welcome to join in with any item you feel represents "backtoschool". The theme is very subjective. It can be ANY item that you feel fits that theme! Any color, style, shape or any other thing that fits that theme is welcome to be entered!

Each month's challenge entries will be listed on the blog and put up for public vote, the winner receiving an ad for their shop on the team for the entire month following. :) Every 6 months, all 6 winners from the last series of challenges will be put up for a vote together, the top vote getter winning a grand prize! Yay!

Please join in our creative celebration for this month! Here's how to enter...

*Challenge Guidelines*

~Participation is open to any EtsyVeg team member.

~If you want to participate, you must enter you item in the official thread in our Google Group or EtsyVeg team Etsy forums.

~Each member may enter one item. Entry involves simply posting the link to an applicable item in your Etsy shop in September's monthly
challenge forum thread and tagging that item with the tag "backtoschool" (all one word, without the quotations). You must
also have your entry tagged with the official team tag, "etsyveg team."

~If an item entered in the challenge sells before the end of the month, please send a convo to the EtsyVeg Etsy shop, including the
link to the sold item, so that it can still be included.

~Deadline for entry is September 30.

~All entries will be featured in a treasury on the EtsyVeg blog at the beginning of next month, to be voted on by the public (EtsyVeg members
can vote, too). The top vote-getter will be awarded with an ad for their Etsy shop on the top of the blog sidebar for the entire month
until the next winner is chosen. At the end of six months, all winners from the past six months will be up for vote on the blog again, this
time eligible to win a grand prize gift!

~All EtsyVeg members (not just participants) are encouraged throughout the month to initiate forum threads about the challenge, make
treasuries by doing a tag search for "etsyveg team" with "backtoschool" and putting only those items in the treasury, or to
generate other types of promotion. (If you do any of these, please let everyone know so that we can all post or click to keep it going!)

~Please direct concerns or questions to Maggie of magglepie, or send an email to etsyveg@gmail.com

Global Food News!

I had to share these tidbits with all y'all as it is the most inspiring food news I've heard in ages.

First  - the French are leading the way in food waste elimination by buying up the "Inglorious" produce farmers otherwise throw away.  With a genius marketing campaign they are selling the 'uglies' for less money and it's working out well!  Watch and be inspired to buy the deformed apples:-)

And…. drumroll veggies!  Kim A. Williams, MD, the incoming President of the American College of Cardiology has switched to a vegan diet and is recommending it!  Read the (short) article here.  Can you even believe it?

Quotable Quotes - Lilly Pulitzer & Etsy Veg FAVE of the DAY

“I designed collections around whatever struck my fancy ... fruits, vegetables, politics, or peacocks!”
- the late, great Lilly Pulitzer.

I'd say Lilly P is a girl after are own veggie hearts.  Speaking of having food at heart....

From Pipsqueek Gourmet, an American/Italian EtsyVeg team member:

"Sugo all'amatriciana - a meatless version of the classic Italian red sauce from Amatrice, Italy (16 oz.)".  Carmen, you can probably hear my belly growl all the way in Italy!

And, that's not all, check out her Etsy shop for more mouthwatering goodies.

Spotlight Seller - Workshop of Oddities

Hi Veggies!  It's time for another round of our Spotlight Seller.  This week, let's meet Vani of Workshop of Oddities.

First, let's look at one of Vani's adorable creations!

Odd handmade unique stuffed toy with a soul/ key chain - Rocky Sebastian Orangeade - violet/ checkered blue

What a cutie!  Now, I know you're all interested to read about Vani.  Here's what she has to say about herself and her shop:

I'm Vani (aka Lyla Estrella) from Extraordinary Workshop of Oddities.

Are you a vegan or vegetarian? How long? - I’m vegetarian for 12 years and vegan for 4 months.

When did you open your shop on Etsy? - In April 2013

What types of things do you sell in your shop? - Toys with a soul aka Oddities, they all have different personalities and missions, and they came to this Planet to make it better - for animals, for nature and oh well, for humans ^_^; also we create everything with them – pin buttons, key chains, bags, bracelets, charity bracelets (we help animals in US and Ukraine), and different kinds of trinkets. Planning to do more vegan/ animal rights stuff soon. Stay tuned!

What do you like to do when you are not working on your shop? – Playing/ listening to music, being on nature, drawing, reading, writing books, making collages, jumping around, spend time with friends and live in my fantasy world.

Where do you get the inspiration for what you create? – I get inspiration from music and animals. Also from nature and people I love.

Where else can we find you? (Blog, facebook fan page, twitter, etc.) EWO (Extraordinary Workshop of Oddities) can be found at:
www.facebook.com/workshop.of.oddities

instagram.com/lyla_estrella

www.pinterest.com/odditiez

Tell us some fun information we might not know about you (where you live, pets you might have, etc.) -
I came from Ukraine to US two years ago, to be with the one I love. So, right now I have two homes - in Ukraine and here. Which is tough, but I'm a vagabond, so it's fine.   We live with three rescued kitties here: Miss Laffy Taffy La Cuteness, Kinky Minky Mouse Queen and Mr. Nanakyu Supercute. All I do is for animals, it’s my mission to make their life better, in any possible way. I love electric guitars and heavy music, but I also like Irish folk and believe in fairies and unicorns. I'm kinda like a mix of light and dark clouds, finding inspiration in both of them.

What is your favorite veggie meal? – Vegan pizza with lots of vegetables and a smoothie (or rum with apple cider), and vegan carrot cake with yerba mate for dessert (:

Here are some more great items from Vani's shop:

Odd unique handmade stuffed toy with a soul/ badge/ pin button/ key chain - Boniface Polka-dot Heart - red, green, blue

Odd artisan knitted bag "Tiny Plush Chuck", red/ green, unique

Bowtie from Chuck"s wardrobe - handmade, red/flowery, unique

Thanks for sharing with us, Vani!  You can find more fabulous items from Vani in her Etsy Shop, Workshop of Oddities.

Quotable Quotes - a Flash of... Rejection, Selection, Connection?

“Artists have a vested interest in our believing in the flash of revelation, the so-called inspiration… shining down from heavens as a ray of grace. In reality, the imagination of the good artist or thinker produces continuously good, mediocre or bad things, but his judgment, trained and sharpened to a fine point, rejects, selects, connects… All great artists and thinkers are great workers, indefatigable not only in inventing, but also in rejecting, sifting, transforming, ordering.”

Do you think Mr. Nietzsche's voluminous mustache could stand a wee transformation? :-)

Quotable Quotes: Positive Body Image!

Most of our spectacular EtsyVeg vendors are women, so I doubt it's too far off the mark to post something female-centric for the day.  It's a thoughtful lesson for all whether we are parenting or not and are vegan/vegetarian or not.

So, gentlemen - join us as we celebrate positive femininity:-)

“As a child, I never heard one woman say to me: ‘I love my body.’ Not my mother, my elder sister, my best friend. Not one woman has ever said: ‘I am so proud of my body.’ So, I make sure I say it to Mia, because a positive physical outlook has to start from a very early age.”
- Kate Winslet

Veggies On Pinterest

Over the past few years, Pinterest, the online site where you can pin items you like to different boards, has become increasingly popular.  I myself have a personal account and love using it.

Now, the lovely and talented members of EtsyVeg have their own group board where we can pin items from our shops.  The good thing about this is that you can find all the handmade items you could want made by vegetarian and vegan makers all in one place.

Our board is still growing, and has lots of cool items for you to check out.  Stop on by our EtsyVeg Board and see what we're sharing!  (And if you're a team member who'd like to join us in our pinning adventures, be sure to let me know your username - we'd love to have you pin with us!)
