Who is the King of Beasts?

Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs. We live by the death of others: we are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.

The Talent and Variety of Etsyveg

Submitted by EtsyVeg Member Jody of ShabbyNChic, a shop filled with one-of-a-kind home decor, antiques, vintage & other goodies! Vist her blog, too!

There are so many great things on Etsy that one could really get lost in all of the wonderful "neccesities". I became a part of the Etsyveg team in early 2009, shortly after opening
my Etsy shop. Not only is this a welcoming group where I feel a part of a caring community, but it is also a very talented group. I am always looking at members' shops and enjoying their creativity and talent. After some success in my own shop, I was able to justify a little shopping spree (which I highly recommend if you can do it).

I started with these great journals from EtsyVeg member
ThisIsIt. ThisisIt was collecting money to save some bulls, so I had to buy something to support them. I am using the Vegetarian journal as my first cookbook of my personal favorite vegetarian recipes. I am planning to use the Peace journal for a personal journal. These journals are so great, I decided to go back and order a custom journal with my favorite quote on it:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead
I love this one even more and can't wait to use it!

Fairtradefamily is now one of my favorite Etsy shops! She makes play food from yarn and her designs are realistic, colorful, and fun, and she is so nice. I found this great side salad and carrots with ranch dressing. I had to have these for my daughter, and not only did she love them, her older brother enjoys playing with them, too. I will definitely be back to this shop!

The next shop I visited on my shopping spree was
Trashrags. I had been admiring her unique t-shirts for awhile, but wanted something slightly different from what she had listed in her shop. I contacted Trashrags with a custom order and she was able to fill it! One tee was a custom color, another was a kids' tee I wanted for my vegetarian son, and the 3rd was a slight variation on her "If you knew what I know, you'd be vegan too". I love these tops and and the professionalism of this shop.

Finally, I found a great PIF ("pay it forward") item.
Graphicdesignbytara offers very professional and fun graphics, but also cares about animals. Recently she started offering this fun graphic free in her shop. When I saw it, I wanted it. Not much more to say - she gave me this graphic for free which I quickly added to my blog.

Lots of talent on this team, and so many great items to find in their shops!

Batty & Her Fur Babies Say Good-bye to Sweater Weather

Hey Everyone!
Batty's here from She's Batty Designs & Batty's Bath.
I just had to share an update of some pictures that were taken a while ago.
Yes, Sassy (first picture) wears a sweater, and Noel (middle picture) and Princess (last picture) wear bandanas. Aren't they the cutest dogs you've ever seen? haha. Drew thinks Sassy looks ridiculous in her sweater but she prances around every time I put it on her haha! She totally loves it! Plus, with that short greyhound coat, she needs some help keeping warm when the weather gets cold :) ... Just wait until the snow starts flying again and they are all wearing their winter coats at the dog park ;)

See more pictures from our "sweater weather day" (that I'm actually in) at my flickr photostream.

Until next time, have fun putting away the doggie sweaters for a little while :)

EtsyVeg Earth Day ExtraVEGanza to Support EarthSave!

EtsyVeg is hosting “Earth Day ExtraVEGanza” later this week to raise funds for the earth lovin' organization, EarthSave International! From Earth Day on Thursday, April 22nd through Saturday, April 24th, participating EtsyVeg member shops will donate 15% of all sales to EarthSave!

EarthSave is an amazing organization that leads a global movement to promote healthy and life-sustaining food choices that make a more positive impact on environmental and human health. They raise awareness of the ecological destruction linked to the production of "food animals" while advocating and promoting a delicious, planet-friendly diet. Help Earth and the environment this weekend, donating to this important cause simply by indulging in a shopping spree with EtsyVeg's veg artisans and their unique handmade and vintage goods!

Tune in on Earth Day for a complete list of participating artisan shops!

Finding Cruelty-free Art & Craft Supplies

Submitted by EtsyVeg member Hazel of ContinuumDesigns. See more on her blog at http://allthosethingsandotherstoo.blogspot.com.

When you're a vegan or vegetarian crafter, it's not just food that has to be carefully inspected for animal ingredients. Often, the materials we use for creating can contain animal by-products, and unlike food, there is rarely a handy ingredient list available for reference.

The best way to check for certain is to get into contact with the manufacturers and ask clearly if animal by-products are used in the production of their materials and if the final product is tested on animals. Just to be certain, it is helpful to include a brief list of likely by-products, as there may be some confusion about what constitutes animal ingredients.

There are several common animal-derived ingredients in art and craft materials to watch out for. Many oil paints, for instance, will typically have some sort of animal fat in them, and certain colours of all types of paints may contain by-products such as bone char (black paints are a common culprit for this). Even the paper used can have non-vegan/vegetarian ingredients in them, as many artistic papers are "sized" using animal products. In addition, brushes are still commonly made with hair and bristle. Glues used to be a problem for those avoiding animal products, but, although it is always best to check, more and more are produced using synthetics.

The good news is that there are increasingly more alternatives to materials that have traditionally used animal products, and they're not just limited to specialist places and prices anymore. Furthermore, many manufacturers have started to provide clear information about what goes into their products and procedures, making it much easier now to find the information that you need to make sure you're not supporting practices and industries that harm other animals.

A list of products I've found to be vegan can be seen
on my blog. If you know about any vegan products, or would like me to contact any companies to find out if their products are vegan, please feel free to leave a comment here or contact me.

Pet of the Week Interview; Scrappy Rat Designs

Etsyveg: What is your pet's name, birthday, sex, breed?

Veronica: Usagi, birthday unknown, gotcha day (when we adopted her) January 1996

Etsyveg: Where/how did you come up with their name?

Veronica: That was the year of the rabbit and Usagi means rabbit in Japanese. And it didn't hurt that we are Sailor Moon fans (Sailor Moon is named Usagi when she's not busy kicking ass.)

Etsyveg: Ooooh Sailor Moon. I remember her! Cool name! Love it!

Etsyveg: How did you meet your pet? Were they Adopted, rescued or other?

Veronica: I was working the intake phone at Independent Animal Rescue when someone called to find a home for a rat terrier they had found. Apparently, they had been returning from a holiday trip and saw a little dog running into traffic on the highway next to a peanut stand. They pulled over to recommend the proprietors put their dog on a leash so she wouldn't get run over. The people at the peanut stand said the dog wasn't theirs, that she'd been hanging out their through 3 days and icy nights. The driver asked if she could help take the dog back to her home if she lived nearby, but the people at the stand said, "Ain't nobody lookin' for that dog." They watched as the little dog tried to jump into any car that stopped and decided to take her back to Raleigh and find her a home. I mentioned to the caller that I already had a rat terrier and she said she'd be right over with a photo. That night we brought my dog Revco over to meet the dog and when he instantly fell in love with her, we did too.

Etsyveg: I met one of my dog's in a similar manner. So great of you to adopt her!

Etsyveg: If your pet was rescued or adopted, from who? Please share the website if you'd like to.

Veronica: Officially, she was adopted from Independent Animal Rescue, where I was working at the time doing intake phones, helping with adoption "matchmaking", as general assistant to the president: www.animalrescue.net They're a fantastic organization. Please support them or better yet, adopt from them!

Etsyveg: What are your pet’s favorite toys, foods, snacks, activities?

Veronica: Usagi loves anything soft and destroyable, like stuffed animals she can eviscerate. She adores eating and would weigh 50 lbs if we let her (she's 14 lbs and really doesn't need to be any bigger.) Her favorite treats are Tofurky Jerky, pizza crusts, and homemade treats (from my book, Yummy For Dogs: A Cookbook for Canines, on sale now via my Etsy shop: scrappyrat.etsy.com All proceeds from the sale of this book go to animal rescue and advocacy groups. This month they go to Etsy for Animals' Charity of the Month, Best Friends Animal Society. Thank you for tolerating this shameless self-promotion. Now, back to Usagi. Her favorite pastimes are playing with her "brother", Revco, barking at the UPS man, chasing squirrels (don't worry, they're much faster than she is), and sleeping under blankets. We've learned not to just flop down on the couch anymore without checking under the blankets first so no one gets smooshed.

Etsyveg: Usagi sounds a lot like my Dogs. "The couch hogs." So cute!

Etsyveg: What are some things you enjoy doing with your pet?

Veronica: Pretty much everything. We like going to coffee shops together, trotting around the dog park, and doing clicker training together. She's so clever, she learns tricks very quickly and loves to show them off to make sure everyone knows what a good girl she is.

Etsyveg: Sounds like fun!

Etsyveg: Do you take them to parks or to see people?

Veronica: Absolutely! She loves to go places. Oakwood dog park is a favorite, but we'll go just about any place that allows dogs. When I worked at a vet kennel, they used to come to work with me. When I was training dogs for Sylvie's K9 Solutions, they got to go to all sorts of training classes and events with me. Usagi and I even took a canine massage class together. We had a blast! Unfortunately, with my spine problems, I can't teach the classes I used to and we don't get to do as many things out of the house as before, but we have a great time when we do!

Etsyveg: Do you take your pet on vacations with you?

Veronica: Yes! We love to travel with our dogs. They've been on trips to DC, to visit their "grandparents" in central Florida, to visit my mom and brother in Tallahassee, on a trip to Charlotte, if they can possibly come along, we'll take them. We've even taken them on a special vacation just for them--the Rat Terrier Jamboree in TN! It's a full weekend of rat terrier events including games, cookouts, raffles, exhibitions, trick contests, races, and lots more. It was so fun, we're hoping to make it there again next year.

Etsyveg: Awesome, that sounds like the perfect vacation for a pup! Lucky pup!

Etsyveg: Does your pet have any special tricks or unique habits?

V: She's very obedient and knows lots of words, but one of my favorite things we've worked on in the past is shape differentiation. She does a pretty good job of identifying squares and triangles. Now we need to add circles to the mix.

E: That's amazing! She really is a smarty!

E: How does your pet like going to the vet? Do s/he *know* when it's time to see the vet & hide, or do they enjoy the extra attention?

V: A little of each. She hates the shots and bordatella vaccine, but she turns right around from making her snarl face to dancing around happily the minute the vet pulls out a "cookie".

E: Oh that's good she recovers gracefully. :)

E: How do your family members get along with the pet?

V: My husband Scott and I are the only humans in the house, and we adore her of course, and vice versa. As for our other pets, well, she and Weezee (cat) are scared of each other so they leave each other alone. Toulouse (also a cat) really wants Usagi to be his friend. He rubs his face on her muzzle, but she just stands there frozen, looking terrified. On the other hand, they happily sleep back-to-back as long as there's a thin layer of blanket between them. It's some sort of unwritten law of peace they follow. Revco, who I mentioned before, loves her dearly. They absolutely hate being separated. Usagi pretty much ignores the turtles and the rats and the degus and she's never met Pelt, my chinchilla (who lives in the dog-free zone where the cats can also find a bit of sanctuary from overactive silly dogs), and that pretty much covers all of our resident animals. We also foster rats and hamsters and the like for Carolina Pet Rescue and for the most part, she disregards them, too. Of course, we don't let her get too close to any of the small animals (she *is* a rat terrier, after all) but she seems to understand that they're not for her to bark at, despite her propensity for barking at similar creatures outside.

E: Do you spoil your pet?

V: Well, I enjoy cooking their meals and I spend most of my time with them, but with all the horrible things I've seen done to animals in my years working in rescue and animal advocacy, I'm inclined to think we should give our pets all the love we can. That said, she is very well trained and disciplined. That in no way means she's been trained using harsh methods--my dogs will never wear choke chains or be shocked into compliance. Good discipline is about consistancy, humane training, and good communication between dog and human, not about bullying dogs.

E: What's the most important/special thing your pet adds to your life?

V: Living in constant physical pain isn't easy, but my animals help keep me going on the hard days. They need me to get up in the morning, they want me to play, train, and snuggle with them, and they always know how to make me laugh. That's really important.

E: Awww that's so hard, living in pain. I know about it myself. So glad you have the animals to help you. HUGS!!

E: Anything else you would like to add?

V: Please adopt from shelters and rescue groups. Rescued animals aren't second-rate, broken, or less-than ones you buy. There are already more pets than there are homes for them. Spay, neuter, and adopt. It's the only way we can stop putting down millions--yes, millions--of healthy, adoptable pets every year in our animal shelters. And that doesn't just go for dogs and cats. Rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds, rabbits, ferrets, and more all can be found in shelters and rescues. There's no need to buy these animals or shop in pet stores that sell them. We can break the cycle of suffering.

E: I agree! I have two rescued doggies. They know how good they have it, and appreciate us all the more! I find myself saying: "I'm the lucky one" all the time.

Thanks again for introducing us to Usagi and the other furry friends on your household! Please check out Veronica's shop!

XOXO Heather :)

April's Monthly Creative Challenge- "Go Green for the Earth!"

You are cordially invited to play, get more involved with the team, get inspired, share your talent, take advantage of some free promotion... get ready for April's team creative challenge!

April's Challenge

Earth Day and all it represents has inspired this month's challenge theme, "Go Green for the Earth!" All EtsyVeg members are welcome to enter any one item that reminds you of "going green", Earth Day, protecting the earth from environmental harm, and respecting all life on the planet. The challenge theme is very subjective, so enter whatever handmade creation, vintage item, or supply, new or already listed in your shop, that fits the theme for you! The theme may be taken literally, as in being the color green, but is wide open to any interpretation. ;) For this challenge members are encouraged to enter items that are eco-friendly, upcycled, recycled, repurposed, etc., but this is NOT required.

Each month's challenge entries will be listed on the blog and put up for public vote, the winner receiving an ad for their shop on the team for the entire month following. :) Every 6 months, all 6 winners from the last series of challenges will be put up for a vote together, the top vote getter winning a grand prize! Yay!

Please join in our creative celebration for this month! Here's how to enter...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Challenge Guidelines*
~Participation is open to any EtsyVeg team member.
~Each member may enter one item. Entry involves simply posting the link to an applicable item in your Etsy shop in April's monthly challenge forum thread and tagging that item with the tag "gogreenforearth" (all one word, without the quotations). You must also have your entry tagged with the official team tag, "etsyveg team."
~If an item entered in the challenge sells before the end of the month, please send a convo to the EtsyVeg Etsy shop, including the link to the sold item, so that it can still be included.
~Deadline for entry is April 30th.
~All entries will be featured in a treasury on the EtsyVeg blog at the beginning of next month, to be voted on by the public (EtsyVeg members can vote, too). The top vote-getter will be awarded with an ad for their Etsy shop on the top of the blog sidebar for the entire month until the next winner is chosen. At the end of six months, all winners from the past six months will be up for vote on the blog again, this time eligible to win a grand prize gift!
~All EtsyVeg members (not just participants) are encouraged throughout the month to initiate forum threads about the challenge, make treasuries by doing a tag search for "etsyveg team" with "gogreenforearth" and putting only those items in the treasury, or to generate other types of promotion. (If you do any of these, please let everyone know so that we can all post or click to keep it going!)
~Please direct concerns or questions to silentlotus or aktie9, or send an email to etsyveg@gmail.com.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The EtsyVeg Monthly Challenge is meant to inspire, recognize, and promote team members and our shops; to spread the word about vegan/vegetarian lifestyles and living consciously; and to raise awareness about the ease of eco-friendly living and the rights of animals to live free of exploitation.

~*Happy creating!*~
