Pet of the Week: Mr. Nibbles & Nibbles, Jr, a father & son duo!

Meet the  father/son gerbil duo Mr. Nibbles and Nibbles, Jr,
companion animals to Adrienne of Auclair de la Lune.
Adrienne tells us that they are fast approaching the two year anniversary
of their moving in with her family...

If your pet was rescued or adopted, from who?
hile we didn’t get them from a rescue organization, we were very happy to adopt them from a family that was no longer able to keep them.

What are your pet’s favorite toys, foods, snacks, activities?
They are avid recyclers and love to shred toilet paper and paper towel rolls. They take their work very seriously and will wake up anytime day or night to tackle cardboard.  No job is too big or too small.  They also enjoy being hand fed sunflower and pumpkin seeds, and enjoy salad scraps as treats.

What are some things you enjoy doing with your pet? Do you take them to parks or to see people? Do you take your pet on vacations with you?
Mr. Nibbles and Nibbles, Jr. do not get to go on vacation with us, but a very nice neighbor visits when we are out of town to take care of them.  They have been known to travel from my fourteen year old son’s bedroom to the family room to hang out with kids, watch TV, or explore mazes that have been built for them.  A trail of gerbil food usually lets me know where they’ve been in the house.  They also sometimes go outside in a travel cage to supervise when their cages are being cleaned.

Does your pet have any special tricks or unique habits?
We’ve been trying to help them become more active (those sunflower seeds can really pack on the ounces).  They have a wheel in their habitat, but none of us have ever seen them use it.  Usually we find it knocked over in the morning, no matter how stable we make it.  I’m sure this is some kind of message – just not sure what it means.
How does your pet like going to the vet?  Do s/he *know* when it's
time to see the vet & hide, or do they enjoy the extra attention?
They have never been to the vet, but they seem pretty healthy.

How do your family members get along with the pet?
Do you spoil your pet? What's the most important/special thing your pet adds to your life?
Everyone in the house loves Mr. Nibbles and Nibbles, Jr.  They are the perfect pets for my son Isaac because they seem similar in many ways.  When you arrange their habitat with new bedding, they immediately rearrange everything into the same mess it was to start with complete with food everywhere, much in the same way Isaac keeps his room.  The gerbil father and son are very close, and can usually be found curled up together under a pile of shavings. In the morning when I wake Isaac up he is curled up under a pile of blankets and laundry in his own bed in much the same fashion.  They really seem to speak the same language!

Anything else you would like to add?

Gerbils are great!
