Upcycle Your Recycling- Join us for a Creative Challenge
You must officially enter the challenge by emailing your intent to etsyveg@gmail.com by October 6th. We will then match you with someone to whom you will send your collection of recycled odds and ends by October 14th at the latest. A completely different participant will send you a collection from which you will build your eco-friendly masterpiece over the following month.
Read more details and about the guidelines here. And come take part in the play!
Help Us Celebrate World Vegetarian Day on October 1st!
LAST MINUTE CHANGE: The World Vegetarian Day Project we've been planning and chatting about has changed a bit, and has been streamlined to make it much easier to participate!
Just choose an original vegan or veg recipe and post it on your blog or submit it to be posted on the EtsyVeg blog. Participants may also host a sale or promotion in their shops on the 1st. Links to the blogs/people submitting recipes and to shops holding sales will be posted on the team blog on Thursday, October1st. Recipes will be compiled in an ebook to be sold for a small cost, which will be donated to an animal/veg-related cause to be voted on).
To celebrate World Vegetarian Day on October 1st and the kickoff of World Vegetarian Month in October, we want to promote the animal, people, and planet-friendly choice to go veg and how easy it is by sharing recipes and resources with the public! There are different, easy ways to take part. Please help us spread the word that veg is the way to go!
1) Let us know that you’d like to participate by emailing etsyveg@gmail.com or by posting to this forum thread by September 30th so we can promote your recipes/promotions. On October 1st, both team blogs will post links to shops holding Veg Day sales and links to blogged recipes (or to the shops of those who don't have a blog and submitted).
- RECIPES: Post an original vegetarian or vegan recipe of your choice on your blog or website, or in your Etsy shop announcement on World Veg Day, October 1st. Those who would rather not post on their own may submit their recipe to the EtsyVeg blog. If you can, post the recipe the night before (Wednesday) and send us the link before the 1st. If this is a problem, please send the links ASAP on Thursday to etsyveg@gmail.com or by convoing via http://etsyveg.etsy.com/.
- SPECIAL SALES: Please send information about your sale, including your shop link, by Friday, September 30th.
- EVENT GRAPHICS: Participants will use a special blurb in their shop announcement on the 1st, and a special avatar for their Etsy shops that will be designed by Heather of nubbycakes (thanks, Heather!). There will also be an event graphic or banner for use on October 1st. Everyone will use at least the avatar on that day, and are encouraged to use all graphics, once released, at anytime leading up to the event and during ebook promotion.
- EBOOK: If you would like your recipe or veg-related article to be included in our ebook, email it to etsyveg@gmail.com by the end of the day on Friday, October 2nd. Please include:
1) Recipe in plain text (email) format2) Shop name/link
3) Graphic you want included with the recipe (if you want something
**other than your shop banner,** otherwise I will just pull everyone's
banners)4) Optional:
~A personal message if you wish, such as why you went veg, help for transitioning
veggies, etc.- whatever you would like to say! (optional, of
course)
~A link to/description of your favorite veg/animal cause (optional).
2) PROMOTE! Even if not participating in one of the above, join the fun by helping to promote the event and its mission. Talk up the event on social media sites. Email friends and family about the event and pass on info about going veg to anyone you think may be interested. Help to promote the ebook and raise funds for charity!3) VOLUNTEER! Along with participants we are in need of volunteers to help make this project go smoothly! Help is needed in the following areas:
• Post links to recipes and sales on the EtsyVeg blog on October 1st.
• Start/maintain an Etsy forum thread for the event and prompt members/participants to bump it.

Sweet, Puffy Vegan Donut Deliciousness
Fabulous, wonderful, delicious DONUTS! Better yet, they're VEGAN! Woot! Until recently I hadn't had a donut (which I adore) since going vegan over eleven years ago. My mom lives less than a block from a donut shop, and when I visit I can smell the sweet, warm, glazey goodness every morning and night. The urge to seek and consume is a hard one to fight! So imagine my utter excitement when a recent Vegetarian Times issue had a VEGAN DONUT feature! Yay!
I read through the magazine and made myself be patient until I got to the article, and it was worth the difficult wait. The piece featured several luscious-sounding donut recipes, all but one of which they suggested cooking in a donut baking pan. I'd never seen one, but I took the article's recommendation and found one online to buy right away (I'm such a sucker). Anyway, I chose the "French Toast" donut recipe, and was not disappointed. The results were heavenly, puffy, cinnamon-sugary rings of delish.
My review of the baking pan? It makes making donuts a complete breeze! The texture of the donuts ends up being more dense than that of fried donuts, but still awesome and still craving-satisfactory. It's suggested to fill the pan's individual donut cups, which look like little bundt pans, only partly full. I suggest filling them to the brim or a bit higher, as they don't seem to rise much. I ordered the larger of two pan sizes- the other was a mini- but the large are still not very big. I will order the mini at some point 'cause I can't resist the cuteness of teeny donuts.
Gotta share the recipe! :) Here' goes... Enjoy!
French Toast Doughnuts
from Veg Times Sept 2009 issue
(Makes 18 mini doughnuts or 6-8 large)
INGREDIENTS
1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
2/3 cup plain soymilk
4 Tbs. nonhydrogenated vegan margarine
1/2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 tsp. egg replacer,such as Ener-G
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Maple Glaze
2 Tbs. plain soymilk
2 Tbs. maple syrup
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Cinnamon Sugar
2 Tbs. sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
DIRECTIONS
1. To make Doughnuts: Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat doughnut pan with cooking spray.
2. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in large bowl.
3. Combine soymilk, margarine, and vinegar in saucepan, and heat over low heat until margarine is melted. Cool. Whisk egg replacer with 2 Tbs. water in small bowl; whisk this mixture and vanilla extract into soymilk mixture. Stir soymilk mixture into flour mixture.
4. Fill each doughnut mold half full with batter. Bake 12 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in doughnut comes out clean. Unmold doughnuts on wire rack to cool, and repeat with remaining batter.
5. To make Maple Glaze: Combine soymilk, maple syrup, sugar, and salt in saucepan, and bring to a simmer, whisking constantly. Remove from heat, and cool 5 to 10 minutes, or until thickened. Stir in vanilla extract.
6. To make Cinnamon Sugar: Whisk together sugar and cinnamon in small bowl.
7. Dip each doughnut into Maple Glaze and sprinkle with Cinnamon Sugar. Let glaze set before serving.

Announcing the "Upcycle Your Recycling Team Creative Challenge"
EtsyVeg has got a lot going on this fall! In just a few weeks, we will have our Vegetarian Awareness Project with Vegan Etsy! And....
As mentioned in the last EtsyVeg Team Digest, Heather suggested a fabulous new project for the team, inspired by this cool contest! With so many EtsyVeggies being very eco-conscious and inspired to live and create green, what could be more perfect than a creative challenge involving recycling and upcycling?! Announcing the **UPCYCLE YOUR RECYCLING CRAFT CHALLENGE**!
Be challenged to create a piece of art/craft of any media/form using five pieces of any recycled material(s). Here’s the kicker- the materials will be chosen and supplied to you by another teamie! Each participant will be matched with another, and will send that match a unique, eclectic assortment of 5 pieces of any material that would otherwise be thrown away, discarded, and or recycled- things that ‘typically’ would not be seen as useful. The person each participant is matched up with will then be challenged to use their pieces in a new creation! Cool, right? Here's another challenge... Take your creativity to a new level by venturing to try a brand new media or one you don't much use. This is optional, of course- it's your choice in the end!
~RECYCLED CRAFT CHALLENGE GUIDELINES~
1) Enter the contest by emailing us at etsyveg@gmail.com to let us know you're
in by October 6th.
2) Each entrant will both send another participant a package of materials and create a new art/craft project. The person you are matched with may or may not be the person sending you your pieces, as folks will be randomly assigned. Matches will be determined by
3) Assemble your five pieces. You must send five pieces to your match for your own entry to be valid.
All recycled bits must:
• not have held toxic substances
• not be sharp
• be non-combustible
• be cleaned of dirt, food, and other contaminants
• be made of a non-liquid, non-perishable material
• be no larger than 4 x 6 inches/10.2 x 15.2 cm, and weigh no more than 4 oz/
113 g.
• be safe for people and animals
• be items seen as atypical for use in creating, that would otherwise be
tossed away or seen as useless, that would make the new creation *green*
These pieces do not have to be used in the form they are received in, but can be cut into pieces, painted, melted, sewn, or whatever else.
Please feel free to send other bits and pieces of creative stuff to your match! Bits of material or paper, paint, beads, other unused art/craft materials, etc. might inspire the person you are sending to. There is no obligation to use these extras. They are just for fun. If you choose to include them, please do not send more than 2-3 pieces.
4) You will then be randomly assigned to another entrant to whom you will ship your 5 pieces. All packages must be mailed by October 14th at the latest. The sooner you can send your pieces, the better. Please email us your ship date once you have sent out your pieces.
5) Once you receive your package from the person who is assigned to send to you, email us again at the above address to let us know, including a photo of the items you received.
6) You may start your project as soon as you have sent us the photo, but the official start date is October 21st. All five recycled bits must be used within ONE final piece! Artisans may incorporate any additional materials they desire, as long as all is used within a one-piece creation.
7) Once your project is complete, send us a second photo, this time of your finished entry. Deadline for submission of your entry/photo is November 18th.
Participants are encouraged to submit photos at any time in the creative process for use contest blog updates and other team media, or to post them anywhere with a link to the contest info/blog.
8) Only projects submitted by the deadline of November 18th will be considered valid entries.
9) Entries will be posted on the blog in early November to be voted on by other members and the public. The top vote-getter will be awarded a prize!
10) Participants may donate their project creations for a sale that will benefit a collectively chosen charity.
HELP TO MAKE IT HAPPEN
Along with participants, we are in need of volunteers to help make this project go smoothly! This would be a great project for those who aren't sure of how to help the team, but would like to contribute! No part is too big or small! :) Help is needed in the following areas:
• Create participant list and assign matches.
• Maintain status checklist, tracking ship and receive dates, photos, etc.
• Post challenge updates/photos/promotion on the blog at regular intervals.
• Promote the contest on various social media, especially once voting begins.
• Start/maintain an Etsy forum thread for the contest, including prompting
members/participants to post updates and feedback there.
• Create a special blog graphic/avatar/banner.
This should be really fun- can’t wait to see the finished projects. Please play with us! :D
